Duke 10-1 opens their ACC Schedule hosting Virginia Tech 8-4, 0-1

 

 

    Duke will open their ACC schedule at home on Wednesday night as they host the Virginia Tech Hokies who are coming off their most impressive win of the season a 86-49 dismantling of preseason top 25 St. Bonaventure.  The Hokies are 8-4 and with one of their losses coming at home in their ACC opener 80-61 to surprising Wake Forest.  Mike Young who in is 3rd year at Blacksburg after 17 years at Radford has the most experienced team in the ACC as he starts 3 seniors, 2 of them being 5th year and two, third sophomores.  The Hokies have as Duke have started the same 5 players in all their games.

Notes:  The Hokies are coming off a 15-7 season last year in which they finished 3rd in the conference and advanced to the NCAA tournament where they lost to Florida.  The Hokies average 71.6 points per game and hold their opponents to 56.5. They are shooting 46.2% from the field and hold their opponents to 39.6%. They are shooting 40.0% from three on 9 made a game and hold their opponents 25.5%. They shoot 72% from the line and commit 13.2 turnovers per game. The game is scheduled for 9 pm and will be televised on ESPN 2. 

 

    

Duke 9-1 hosts Elon 3-8

 

 

  Maybe the third team is the charm. Elon becomes the third team that is scheduled for today's game against Duke. Mike Schrage a former Duke Director of Basketball Operations from 2002-2008 at Duke will bring his Fighting Phoenix to Durham for the 4pm game. Elon had to get out of a game with Shaw University today in order to participate. Schrage a big favorite of all of the Duke community followed up his tenure at Duke with an 8 year stint as an assistant to Johnny Dawkins at Stanford before taking the Elon job in 2018.  Elon will return 3 starters from a 10-9 team that played in Colonial conference's championship game for the 2nd year in a row last year.

Duke 8-1 hosts Appalachian St. 6-5

 

  Duke will return to the court tomorrow night to take on the defending Sun Belt Conference champions in the Appalachian State Mountaineers. The Mountaineers won 4 games in a row to capture their first NCAA bid in 20 years and led by Coach Dustin Kerns who is in 3rd year. They return 3 starters and 10 players from that team. They start 4 seniors and a junior.

Duke 7-1 hosts South Carolina St. 3-7

 

 

          Duke will return to the court after 2 weeks off to host the South Carolina State Bulldogs.  The Bulldogs are led by Tony Madlock who is in his first year at the Orangeburg, S.C. school.  He has his Bulldogs at 3-7 and having already won 3 times as many games as they won all of last year as they finished 1-17. The Bulldogs of the MEAC conference return two starters from last year.

Duke basketball after November and after 8 games.

 

           

 

        The Duke basketball just completed their November schedule and the first 8 games of the season. They played three games against top tier teams in Ohio State, top ten Kentucky and top ranked Gonzaga, winning 2 of the three and 5 games against teams that are ranked much lower, but division one teams none the less and they swept those 5. Lets first break down the top games first, individually and collectively.

       The Duke averaged 77.0 points a game against these three and held their opponents to 74.3. They shot 45.3% from the field and their opponents slightly out shot them with a 45.6%.  They shot 24% from three and their opponents shot 35.6%.  Duke was out rebounded in all of these games and by an average of 42-34 per game.  Duke only committed an average of 8.7 turnovers per game and forced their opponents to 14 per game. 

      Individually here are statistics for some of the main players.  

Wendell Moore averaged 16.3 points, 54.2% from the field, 1-5, 20% from three, 6.0 rebound, 4.7 assists and 58.8% from the line.

Paolo Banchero averaged 19.0 points, 48.6% from the field, 4-14, 26.6% from three, 5.7 rebounds, 1.0 assists, 83.3% from the line.

Trevor Keels averaged 13.3 points, 36.6% from the field, 3-13, 23.1% from three,  2.7 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 53.8% from the line.

Mark Williams averaged 10.3 points per game, 63.6% from the field, 0-1, 0.0% from three, 7.3 rebounds, 3.8 blocks, 67% from the line.

Jeremy Roach averaged  8.0 points per game, 32.1% from the field, 1-8, 12.5% from three, 4.3 rebounds, 1.0 assists, 66.7% from the line.

 

  Overall counting all 8 games Duke is averaging 83.1 points per game and are holding their opponents to 65.4.

  They are shooting  47.4% from the field and holding their opponents to 42.1%

  They are shooting 32.8% from three on 7.5 made per game and are allowing 32.6% on 7.4 made.

  Duke is shooting 74.6% from the free throw line.

  Duke is out rebounding their opponents by 3.5.

  They are assisting at a rate of 17.6 per game and forcing 14.9 turnovers, while only committing 8.5.

   Trevor Keels is averaging 11.9 points, 3.6 rebounds, 3.3 assists, shooting 35.9% from the field, 30.2% from three and 66.7% from the line 31.9 minutes.

   Mark Williams is averaging 9.6 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.0 assists, shooting 63.6% from the field, 0.0 from three and 58.3% from the line in 19.8 minutes.

  Jeremy Roach is averaging 9.0 points, 2.9 rebounds, 3.0 assists, , shooting 38.4% from the field, 25% from three and 71.4% from the line in 33 minutes.
